Respect for the Journey
by John Fischer
Everybody knows some truth. Everybody is right about
something. Even the most evil of people is getting
something right. Traditionally, members of the mafia
have great family values. They are loyal. They will
kill for their loyalty, but they are loyal,
nonetheless.
When seeking to reach out to those around you who do
not have a relationship with Christ, it's best to find
out first what they already know, because they are
getting something right. Think about it: Who would
you rather be around someone who agrees with you or
someone who is always pointing out where you are
wrong?
Ask the Holy Spirit to make you sensitive to the
spiritual needs of those around you who do not know
Christ. Make it your goal to find out about the
spiritual journey of others. Pastor Rick suggests we
pray, Father, help me to understand what is keeping
this person from knowing you. We can't make people
believe, but we may be able to help remove some of
their barriers to believing.
It's not necessary to clear the table of someone
pre-Christian spiritual journey before you can set up
Christ. Chances are Christ is already on their table
somewhere in the form of truth. Jesus said He was the
truth, so that all truth has something to do with
Jesus. You can work this either way. You can start
with Jesus and lay out the truth, or you can start
with the truth and work your way back to Jesus.
Starting with Jesus works fine for those who already
believe in Him and want to learn more. Starting with
truth is best for those who may have doubts about
Jesus but might relate to the truths He espoused.
Jesus said that? someone might say.
Yes, you could say in response, and would you be
interested in hearing some other things He said as
well?
What's important is that we have enough respect for
people to value what they already know, and then make
ourselves available and willing to find out.
As Christians, we need to always remember we are not
persuading people about God all by ourselves. The
Holy Spirit is doing this, and was already doing it
before we came along. We can introduce people to
Jesus, but we cannot make anyone believe; just like
you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it
drink.
I try to please everyone in everything I do. I don't
just do what I like or what is best for me, but what
is best for them so they may be saved. 1 Corinthians
10:33 NLT

Growing Younger

Growing Youngerby John Fischer
Last week I discussed physical therapy as an illustration of spiritual growth. Even while I was writing that, I was also thinking about another aspect of faith that sometimes works the other way. It’s good to grow older in some ways, but it’s also good to grow younger in others.
Sometimes, we are bolder when we are younger in faith because we don’t know any better. We simply believe God like a child and venture out trusting He is with us. And you know what? He is.
When my wife first became a Christian, she was a flight attendant for a major airline. She and another fellow-believer would bid flights together for support and encouragement, but they would also bravely ask God for two things on each flight: one person to introduce to Jesus, and another believer who would, in turn, encourage them. They would purposely bid the shortest flights (usually the least desirable legs so they were easy to get), because they could get more of them in (as many as five in a day) thus giving God more of an opportunity to work through them. As she tells the story, God took them up on the challenge and fulfilled their request every time, sometimes in miraculous ways. (One time they were walking off a flight somewhat disappointed having not found a fellow-believer to encourage them, when who should they run into in the jetway, boarding early for the next flight, but Billy Graham!) I can’t help but think this all made God smile.
Then I think of all the bold things I did, and expected God to do, over 30 years ago during the Jesus movement when we could gather a crowd anywhere on the streets by singing about Jesus. What’s the deal now? Have I gotten too “old” to expect these things?
Growing in Christ never means you stop being a child. If you’ve ever been around a new believer, or you are one yourself, you will know what I mean. And this kind of childlike faith should never be over. Actually, it should be on the rise. Sure we will grow older in the faith, but we should also think about how we can grow younger as well.
Where do you need to trust God today? Was your faith stronger in some ways when you were a younger Christian? Where do you need to “grow younger” now?

What's God Up To?
by John Fischer
Bono, lead singer for the rock group U2, an outspoken and somewhat controversial Christian philanthropist, recently went on a tour of evangelical institutions to enlist Christian support for the AIDS crisis in Africa. Along the way he said something to the effect that our mission in the world is not to do our own thing and ask God to bless it, but to find out what God is already doing in the world and get where He is. Whatever you might think of Bono, he’s right about this.
Rick Warren put it this way in The Purpose Driven® Life, “God is at work in the world, and he wants you to join him” (page 281). Same thing.
We need to get used to the idea that wherever we go, God is already there. I used to arrogantly think that I actually brought God places. As if He couldn’t get anywhere without me. It’s a wonder I wasn’t struck by lightening! Don’t get me wrong; God definitely uses us when we show up for service, but our attitude needs to be “What is God up to here?” not “Thank God I’m here!”
So what is He up to? In a very general way, I see four things God is doing in American culture.
First, He is creating in people a hunger for spiritual answers to life’s more difficult questions. You could see this when we were first labeled the postmodern age. What that meant was that the modern age, where we placed our hope in education, science and technology as capable of solving every human problem, is over. Now, in the postmodern age, people are seeking other answers to life beyond what they can control. That’s why you see the spiritual and the mystical as dominating themes in film and television. Paul said to the Pagans in Athens, “Men of Athens, I notice that you are very religious.” Acts 17:22 NLT We could say the same thing to our culture today only we might use the word “spiritual” instead of “religious”. Either way, it’s a positive place to begin.
Second, there appears to be a new interest in Jesus. Mel Gibson’s film played a big role in this. People who might be closed to Christians or Christianity may yet be interested in looking into Jesus.
Third, fear. People are afraid. Since 9/11 no one feels safe anymore. And when people are afraid they are much more open to God than when they are complacent and comfortable.
And finally, people are looking for meaning and purpose in life. How else can you explain the phenomenal success of The Purpose Driven Life that has taken everyone here by surprise?
I mention these things because it’s important to realize when you’re out in the world that the conversation that ends with the gospel has already begun. God is already at work in the world. Time to go where He is and join the conversation.

READ ONLY IF YOU HAVE TIME FOR GOD

Let me tell you, make sure you read all the way to the bottom. I
almost deleted this email but I was blessed when I got to the end.
Subject: READ ONLY IF YOU HAVE TIME FOR GOD
God, when I received this
e-mail, I thought...
I don't have time for this..... And, this is really inappropriate during work.
Then, I realized that this kind of thinking is... Exactly, what has
caused lot of the problems in our world today.
We try to keep God in church on Sunday morning...
Maybe, Sunday night...
And, the unlikely event of a midweek service.
We do like to have Him around during sickness...
And, of course, at funerals.
However, we don't have time, or room, for Him during work or play...
Because... That's the part of our lives we think... We can, and
should, handle on our own.
May God forgive me for ever thinking...
That... there is a time or place where...
HE is not to be FIRST in my life.
We should always have time to remember all HE has done for us.
If, You aren't ashamed to do this...
Please follow the directions...
Jesus said, "If! you are ashamed of me, I will be
ashamed of you before my Father.
Not ashamed?
Pass this on ONLY IF YOU MEAN IT!!
Yes, I do Love God.
HE is my source of existence and Savior.
He keeps me functioning each and every day. Without Him, I will be
nothing. Without Him, I am nothing. But, with Christ, HE strengthens
me. (Phil 4:13) This is the simplest test.
If You Love God... And, are not ashamed of all the marvelous things HE
has done for you...
Send this to ten people and the person who sent it to you!
I don't think I know 10 people who would admit they love Jesus. Do You love Him?
THE POEM
I knelt to pray but not for long, I had too much to do.
I had to hurry and get to work For bills would soon be due.
So I knelt and said a hurried prayer,
And jumped up off my knees.
My Christian duty was now done
My soul could rest at ease.
All day long I had no time
To spread a word of cheer. No time to speak of Christ to friends,
They'd laugh at me I'd fear.
No time, no time, too much to do,
That was my constant cry,
No time to give to souls in need
But at last the time, the time to die.
I went before the Lord, I came, I stood with downcast eyes. For in his
hands God held a book; It was the book of life.
God looked into his book and said
"Your name I cannot find.
I once was going to write it down...
But never found the time"
Now do you have the time to pass it on?
Make sure that you scroll through to the end.
Easy vs. Hard
Why is it so hard to tell the truth but Yet so easy to
tell a lie?
Why are we so sleepy in church but Right when the sermon is over ! we
suddenly wake up?
Why is it so hard to talk about God but yet so easy to talk about nasty stuff?
Why is it so boring to look at a Christian magazine, but yet so easy
to look at a nasty one?
Why is it so easy to delete a Godly e- ma il, but yet we forward all
of the nasty ones?
Why are the c! hurches getting smaller but yet the bars and dance
clubs are getting larger?
Do you give up? Think about it . Are you going to forward this, or delete it?
Just remember-God is watching you. Prayer Wheel-Let's see the devil
stop this one!
Here's what the wheel is all about. When you receive this, say a
prayer for the person that sent it to you....
That's all you have to do......
There is nothing attached....
This is so powerful....
Do not stop the wheel, please....
Of all the free gifts we may receive, Prayer i! s the very best one....
There are no costs, but wonderful rewards... GOD BLESS!
May God keep you and bless you. If this doesn't give you chills,
nothing will...this message is very true. Hope you are all as blessed
as I was from this story. I wonder how many people will delete this
without reading it because of the title on it?
There once was a man named George Thomas, pastor in a small New
England town. One Easter Sunday morning he came to the Church carrying
a rusty, bent, old bird cage, and set it by the pulpit. Eyebrows were
raised and, as if in response, Pastor Thomas began to speak....."I was
walking through town yesterday when I saw a young boy coming toward me
swinging this bird cage.
On the bottom of the cage were three little wild birds, shivering with
cold and fright. I stopped the lad and asked, "What you got there,
son?" "Just some old birds," came the reply.
"What are you gonna do with them?" I asked.
! "Take 'em home and have fun with 'em," he answered. "I'm gonna tease
'em and pull out their feathers to make 'em fight I'm gonna have a
real good time." "But you'll get tired of those birds sooner or later.
What will you do?"
"Oh, I got some cats," said the little boy.
"They like birds. I'll take 'em to them."
The pastor was silent for a moment. "How much do you want for those birds, son?"
"Huh?? !!! Why, you don't want them birds, mister. They're just plain
old field birds. They don't sing. They ain't even pretty!"
"How much?" the pastor asked again.
The boy sized up the pastor as if he were crazy and said, "$10?"
The pastor reached in his pocket and took out a ten dollar bill. He
placed it in the boy's hand. In a flash, the boy was gone.
The pastor picked up the cage and gently carried it to the end of the
alley where there was a tree and a grassy spot. Setting the cage down,
he opened the door, and by softly tapping the bars persuaded the birds
out, setting them free.
Well, that explained the empty bird cage on the pulpit, and then the
pastor began to tell this story.
One d! ay Satan and Jesus were having a conversation. Satan had just !
come fro m the Garden of Eden, and he was gloating and boasting. "Yes,
sir, I just caught the world full of people down there... Set me a
trap, used bait I knew they couldn't resist. Got 'em all!
"What are you going to do with them?" Jesus asked.
Satan replied, "Oh, I'm gonna have fun! I'm gonna teach them how to
marry and divorce each other, how to hate and abuse each other, how to
drink and smoke and curse. I'm gonna teach them how to invent guns and
bombs and kill each other. I'm really gonna have fun!"
"And what will you do when you get done with them?" Jesus asked. "Oh,
I'll kill 'em," Satan glared proudly. "How much do you want for them?"
Jesus asked.
"Oh, you don't want those people. They ain't no good. Why, you'll take
them and they'll just hate you. They'll spit on you, curse you and
kill you. You don't want those people!!"
"How much?" He asked again.
Sa! tan looked at Jesus and sneered, "All your blood, tears and your life
Jesus said, "DONE!"
Then He paid the price.
The pastor picked up the cage he opened the door and he walked from the pulpit.
Notes: Isn't it funny how s! imple it is for people to trash God and
then wonder why the wo! rld's go ing to hell.
Isn't it funny how someone can say "I believe in God" but still follow
Satan (who, by the way, also "believes" in God).
Isn't it funny how you can send a thousand jokes through e-mail and
they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages
regarding
the Lord, people think twice about sharing?
Isn't it funny how when you go to forward this message, you will not
send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they
believe, or what they will think of you for sending it to them
Isn't it funny how I can be more worried about wha! t other people
think of me than what God thinks of me.
I pray, for everyone who sends this to their entire address book, they
will be blessed by God in a way special for them.
And send it back to the person who sent it, to let them know that
indeed it was sent out to many more.
